A Harley rider did not appreciate my attempt to pass him, despite him going slow for quite some time. In turn, he cut me off and brake checked me, a 4000 lb car moving at 75 mph and accelerating. He best be glad I got new brakes in July, otherwise he’d be a nice paste in the middle of I-44.

So...stupid question. If you had a dashcam to prove that you hit him from him brake-checking you, I would hope he would be considered at fault in any accident?
I know around where I live, it’s, sadly, a ‘if YOU hit IT, it’s your fault’ type scenario....

In all honesty I probably would have tapped him, and then immediately regretted it. Kudos to you for taking the high road. Road raging on a bike seems incredibly stupid, you’re trying to intimidate someone yet the only thing stopping them from killing you is the fact they still value your dumb-ass life

I had a bro on a sport bike do this to me once in Sacramento California. it was all I could do to not rear end the motorcycle and spend the nex t three hours getting interviewed by CHP. I commend you for not turning them into hamburger.

I don’t think he would have the cojones to try that shite with my Crown Victoria. The pushbars are known to eat motorcyclists for breakfast.
That said, you have a clear shot of his license plate. Report him to the state patrol so that it’s on record if he does it again to someone else.

I’ll never understand people’s trust in the general public to not kill them. He bet his life on you having good enough reaction time and brakes to not hit him, on top of assuming you’d actually try to stop. It’s similar to blindly jaywalking.

I feel bad for whoever’s windshield and bumper
he kills himself on. Hopefully they have a dashcam too. This video is a pretty good motivator to buy one...

I have my bike license but don’t own a bike and don’t intend to ride one. My general methodology when driving my cars is “drive like everyone around you is trying to kill you” as I don’t trust the crumple zones and airbags in any of my cars to do a damn thing in a crash. I see this guy also follows this methodology, but seeking a different outcome.

exactly. Just brake and back off, no need to escalate the situation or help him achieve his goal of being another motorcycle safety statistic

To me it looks like he’s moved over without looking and pooped himself when he realised you were there and tapped the brakes out of panic.
I think he’s just a shit rider

File an incident report online with the State Patrol, and send them the video. They’ll at least have that on record if it happens again, is the point.
When I say "report" I don't mean call 911. I mean file something so it's in their database.

I’ve seen quite a few bikers brake check cars they think wronged them . He didn’t head check before drifting into the far left lane so I bet he didn’t see you until it was too late. So he’s a shite rider on top of being a dick.
I once had a Harley guy come up on me and brake check me for no reason. I was on an empty 6 lane superhighway and I was doing the speed limit in the second from the right lane. I was literally the ONLY car on the road. He came 4 lanes over from the left lane, passed me with just a few inches space, then brake checked me twice. Wtf!?

Unfortunately, there seems to be a slightly younger shitbag demographic out there, maybe lagging boomers or Xers who didn’t conform. You see it in political affiliation as well.

I’m not sure that was a brake check, I’m not sure what that was. He doesn’t do much braking. It almost looks like he had no idea you were there, moved into the overtaking lane and accidentally(?) braked instead of accelerating.
I mean who’s dumb enough to brake check on a bike?
I call idiocy and ignorance over maliciousness but it’s a bit of a mystery to me.

You are in the right for shure. I have also experienced this several times, so I get it.
Eventually, I found my path was to buy a car that both speeds up and slows down fast enough to make this situation only appear rarely.
That is a pretty costly path, though. And you still get cut off sometimes.

If he wanted to be seen (which most riders would claim is important to them), he would have signaled.

I’m not sure what it is with Harley riders and their hatred of being passed. I’ve had several encounters like this, the most recent being today. Two Harley dudes were camping in the left lane. Three of us ended up passing them on the right. When I went by, one of them was crowding the center line so much that his handlebar and right foot were over the line. On my right was a Jersey barrier, so there was nowhere to go. I squeezed past anyway.

No it looks like he did it on purpose, there’s a segment of morons who do that sort of thing to try and prove something and/or create space . From what I see in the video he was watching to his left in his mirror, and blocked dtg11. It’s the sort of behavior a certain type of rider will do to keep a gap for his buddies to merge through.
Only this time his buddy was smarter and not in a rush.

99% sure he doesn’t do it on purpose. Seemed to me he wasn’t paying attention, went to downshift so he could accelerate but didn’t rev match properly which caused him to scrub speed, accidentally tapped his rear brake at the same time. Dude clearly rides like a bag of dicks and is 100% in the wrong, but I don’t think he maliciously brake checked you.
Edit: nevermind. Watched it again but with sound on and paid more attention. There was no shift there. And as the video ends he throws his hand up as if to flick you off? He’s definitely a malicious dick bag with a death wish.

From how he continued to act after that, it was very intentional. Plus it’s more difficult to accidentally brake hard on a bike than a car

Harley riders think they own the road and I have a feeling that their image is more to blame with the failing company than the cost of the bikes.

He flicked me off multiple times, tapped his brakes, and threw a Gatorade bottle at me. He also followed me and continued to harass me and other cars. Very intentional, he’s just angry that a college student in a 10 year old car is passing his big bad bike and even bigger ego

Harley riders have a propensity to road rage, it seems. I had something similar happen in STL, just without the brake check.

Some states have at-fault laws where rear ending someone is 100% the fault of the rear vehicle. The law was made long before dashcams existed, and was meant to emphasize driving safety. The flawed logic behind it posits that if a rear end accident occurs, the instigating driver was not paying attention or was otherwise negligent. The authors never once considered brake-checks.
